What is a Dringlichkeitscode?

Dringlichkeitscode is a special urgency code that a doctor in Germany can issue to a patient if the medical situation requires an immediate consultation with a specialist (such as a cardiologist, neurologist, gynecologist, etc.).

This code is used to expedite an appointment through a special health insurance service.

When is a Dringlichkeitscode needed?

A doctor may issue a Dringlichkeitscode if the patient’s condition is not an emergency (i.e., does not require an ambulance) but waiting several months is medically undesirable or dangerous. The code is usually indicated on the referral (Überweisung) or issued separately.

How to use the Dringlichkeitscode?

If you have a Dringlichkeitscode, contact the service:

📞 116 117 — the nationwide German medical appointment service (Terminservicestelle).

Through this service, you can sometimes get a doctor’s appointment faster, and you can also try to find a doctor who speaks your language (though, unfortunately, this isn’t always possible and depends on the region and specialty). Appointments can be made by phone or online—the system selects an available time slot based on medical urgency.

If you need an interpreter

If you need language assistance during your doctor’s visit, you can use our free telephone interpretation service. Our assistants will help with translation during the consultation so that you can better understand the doctor and clearly explain your situation.

Important to know: The Dringlichkeitscode does not guarantee an appointment with a specific doctor, but it increases your chances of being seen sooner.

The code has a limited validity period, so we recommend contacting 116117 as soon as possible after receiving it.

And in case of a sudden deterioration in your condition or an emergency, you should call 112.

Stay healthy!
