How to Recognize Depression and Burnout: A Checklist for Yourself and Your Loved Ones

Moving to another country, war, separation from loved ones, uncertainty about the future, health problems, or loneliness can seriously affect mental well-being.

How to Recognize Depression and Burnout: A Checklist for Yourself and Your Loved Ones

For many Ukrainians in Germany, these challenges have become part of everyday life. That’s why it’s important to recognize the signs of depression and emotional burnout early on, so you don’t have to face the problem alone.

Depression or Just a Bad Mood?

Everyone feels sad, tired, or irritable from time to time. That’s normal. But if these symptoms don’t go away within a few weeks and start to interfere with daily life, it’s worth paying special attention to them.

Checklist of Possible Signs of Depression

✅ Persistent sadness, a depressed mood, or a feeling of hopelessness.

✅ Loss of interest in things that used to bring joy.

✅ A feeling of emptiness or indifference toward events around you.

✅ Constant fatigue, even after resting.

✅ Sleep disturbances: insomnia or, conversely, excessive sleepiness.

✅ Changes in appetite and weight.

✅ Difficulty concentrating and making decisions.

✅ Feelings of guilt, worthlessness, or low self-esteem.

✅ Thoughts that life has lost its meaning.

If you recognize several symptoms on this list that have lasted more than two weeks, you should seek professional help.

What is burnout?

Burnout often develops gradually. It can be linked not only to work but also to prolonged stress caused by migration, caring for loved ones, volunteering, or constant anxiety about events in Ukraine.

Checklist of burnout signs

✅ Constant exhaustion and lack of energy.

✅ Feeling that even simple tasks require excessive effort.

✅ Decreased motivation and productivity.

✅ Irritability over minor issues.

✅ A desire to avoid interacting with people.

✅ A feeling that everything has lost its meaning.

✅ Frequent headaches, sleep problems, or other physical symptoms with no obvious cause.

✅ A feeling that you’re “running on autopilot” and don’t feel any joy in life.

What should you look for in loved ones?

Sometimes it’s hard for a person to notice changes in their own condition. Signs that your friend, partner, or family member needs support may include:

  • isolation and withdrawal from social interaction;
  • sudden mood swings;
  • loss of interest in usual activities;
  • constant complaints of fatigue;
  • talk of hopelessness or a lack of future;
  • abuse of alcohol or other psychoactive substances.

In such situations, it’s important not to judge the person or tell them to “pull themselves together.” Instead, offer support and help them find a professional.

When should you seek help immediately?

Situations requiring special attention include when a person:

  • talks about suicide or self-harm;
  • expresses a desire to disappear or die;
  • gives away personal belongings or says goodbye to loved ones;
  • exhibits sudden changes in behavior after a prolonged period of depression.

In such cases, it’s essential to seek crisis or medical help as soon as possible.

Remember: asking for help is normal

Depression and burnout aren’t signs of weakness. These are conditions that can affect anyone, especially during periods of prolonged stress and life changes.

While taking care of your physical health, it’s important not to forget about your mental well-being. Talking to a psychologist, joining a support group, or simply having a heart-to-heart conversation with someone you trust can be the first step toward feeling better.
